Review: Limited Edition Fab Tropical Ice Lollies

Fab Tropical is a new limited edition flavour for the classic ice lolly brand. It's a great idea and, even though we enjoyed their last new flavour, the Apple & Blackcurrant, this Tropical flavour is much more appealing. The Fab Tropical is described as a mixed tropical fruit flavour ice lolly with a chocolate flavour coating and sugar strands. From the ingredients there are natural fruit juices from pineapples, oranges and passion fruit, with a small amount banana puree too. The ice lollies are also free from aritifical colours, flavours or preservatives.

In terms of flavour, the top half of the ice lolly is dominated by the chocolate and sprinkles coating, so there was only a light tropical fruity flavour coming through. Underneath this top layer, I initially found the combination of pineapple and passion fruit created a mango-like flavour in the main ice lolly. This sweeter tropical flavour then gives way to a stronger passion fruit taste with a pleasingly tangy edge. It definitely feels strange eating an ice lolly when it's still winter, but once the days start getting warmer, I'm sure these will be fab (sorry couldn't resist!).

Overall, it's lovely to see an updated twist on a favourite classic ice lolly. I hope they release these in a Mini version aswell, like they did with the previous Fab Apple & Blackcurrant edition.

Review: Magnum Pink Raspberry & Black Espresso

I finally managed to track down the new Magnum Pink & Black ice creams to review and I was especially pleased to find them in this multipack Mini format. There are three mini ice creams of each variety, Magnum Pink Raspberry and Magnum Black Espresso, in the pack. It's always exciting when Magnum releases new flavours but even better when they're both so delicious sounding. Even the packaging is interesting with it's visually appealing constract of bright and dark colours.

I much prefer the Mini Magnum size as I sometimes find the bigger versions a bit too heavy. They are also lower in calories - there are 166 calories in the Mini Magnum Pink and 159 calories in the Mini Magnum Black, which I don't think is too bad for this type of ice cream.

The Magnum Pink Raspberry is described as a raspberry ice cream with raspberry sauce (9%), coated in milk chocolate (28%) and an outer pink coating (6%). Whilst the Magnum Black Espresso has a vanilla flavoured ice cream, swirled with a coffee sauce (9%), and coated in dark chocolate (32%).

Magnum Pink Raspberry: I was most interested in trying this delicate perlescent pink ice cream as I have quite a sweet tooth when it comes to ice cream flavours. The inner ice cream here has a deliciously creamy and sweet raspberry flavour, with the swirls of raspberry sauce adding an extra hit of the fruity raspberry. It's covered in the distinctive Magnum milk chocolate, with it's strong cocoa flavour. The chocolate is slightly sweetened by the outer pink coating but there isn't any additional raspberry flavour here.

I really enjoyed the combination of the raspberry (which is fast becoming one of my new favourite flavours) and delicious milk chocolate. It's much tastier than the disappointing Magnum Yogurt Fresh Raspberry from a few years ago, and also the far-too-sweet Magnum Strawberry & White which I've had on holiday in Portugal.

Magnum Black Espresso: Even though I love my coffee, I'm always a bit wary of coffee flavoured ice creams and chocolates - they always have the possibility of going hideously wrong, with either a cheap tasting coffee flavour or just being overly strong. Luckily the Magnum Black Espresso manages to strike the perfect balance between that first rush of espresso flavour, from within the inner swirls, and the creamy vanilla ice cream itself. It all combines to create a milkier and sweeter coffee flavour, but one that can still pack a punch with a great-tasting espresso hit. The overall flavour is not as intense as I was expecting and even the dark outer chocolate (which I thought would be very dark) tastes quite sweet against the lovely espresso flavour inside.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy the Magnum Black Espresso as much as the Magnum Pink Raspberry but I'm actually finding it hard to choose a favourite between the two of them!

If you've tried either of these new Magnum varieties then I'd love to hear from you in the comments below.

New Instore: Walkers MixUps

A quick post with this great new Walker's Mix-Ups range of snacks and crisps. These are all sharing bag size and were all spotted by Aaron R. in Asda. Thank you Aaron for the great photos!

Walkers MixUps Cheese & Bacon Crisps Mix: A mix of cheese and bacon flavoured crisps - it's quite a safe combination but I still want to try these! £0.97p at Asda.

Walkers MixUps Spicy Snacks Mix (on bottom shelf):  This combines lots of different Walkers snacks into one bag; Wotsits, Doritos, Monster Munch and French Fries. It's also available in a Cheese Snacks Mix variety. £0.97p at Asda.

Walkers MixUps Cheese & Worcester Sauce Crisp Mix: I'm not really a fan of the Worcestershire Sauce crisps but I do like melted cheese toasties with Worcestershire sauce on top... so I guess this could be a winning combination. £0.97p at Asda.

Walkers Popcorn Mix Sweet & Salty: I love sweet and salty popcorn combinations so I'm sure I'll be buying this in the future. Great for movie nights! These are also available in a Sweet & Spicy Popcorn Mix. £0.97p at Asda.

Thanks again to Aaron for the great photos. If you spot any new products instore then I'd love to hear from you - grocerygems@gmail.com

New Instore: Ben & Jerry's Speculoos Ice Cream, Easter Cakes & More!

A round up of new products spotted instore - let me know in the comments if you've tried any of these!

Ben & Jerry's Speculoos? Specu-love Cookie Core: Any regular readers will know how much I love Speculoos as a flavour. I'm barely over the excitement of the Krispy Kreme Biscoff doughnut and along comes another awesome speculoos biscuit inspired product. There are two other new varieties available in this Cookie Core range; What-a-Lotta Chocolate Cookie Core and Utter Peanut Butter Clutter Cookie Core. I'm sure I'll try those last two eventually but look out for my review of the Speculoos variety soon! £3.00p at Sainsbury's.

Limited Edition Fab Tropical: I didn't get the best picture of the box - it shows lots of tropical fruits along the bottom. I'm a fan of the Fab range, especially during the summer, as it's a relatively low calorie choice for an ice cream/lolly and I'm looking forward to trying this new Tropical variety.  Review coming soon! £2.00p at Sainsbury's.

Cadbury Dairy Milk Marvellous Ice Creams: For some reason I'm not that excited about these ice creams from Cadbury, and I wasn't really tempted to buy them at £4.00p a tub. The flavours above are; Zingy Raspberry Choc Brownie and Jelly Popping Candy. The first one doesn't sound too bad but I think I'll pass on the second one. £4.00p each at Sainsbury's.

Cadbury Dairy Milk Marvellous Ice Creams: There was also this yellow tub which is a bizarre Salted Caramel & Sour Cherry concoction. I was disappointed that this wasn't a banana ice cream instead! If you try any of these varieties then I'd love to hear from you in the comments below. £4.00p at Sainsbury's.

Magnum Pink Raspberry: I've posted about the new Magnum Pink and Magnum Black before. I had heard that they were available at Tesco but I haven't been able to find them in a Tesco near me. I finally spotted them today in Sainsbury's at £3.40p.

Magnum Mini Pink & Black: I was hoping that the new Magnum Pink & Black would be available as Mini version but I didn't expect to find them both in a Multipack too. I much prefer the mini sized Magnums, as I find the large ones a bit too much to eat in one go, but the smaller sizes are perfect. I picked up a pack of these too - my freezer is now well stocked with ice creams! £2.00p at Sainsbury's.

Walls After School Family Favourites: Not new, but an interesting new rebranding as "after school" snacks for this selection of classic Walls ice creams. £3.00p at Sainsbury's.

Walls Push Up with Haribo Gold Bears; I think these have been available individually in freezer cabinets and from ice cream vans but I don't remember seeing them for sale in a multipack before. I wonder if they are replacing the Walls Haribo Dino Candy Ice Lollies? £2.50p at Sainsbury's.

Walker's Limited Edition Linda's Chicken & Chorizo: I can't find any information about these but they don't seem to be part of any new Walker's flavour competition. I tried these today and they're very tasty with a distinctive smoky chorizo flavour, I'll have a full review soon. £1.50 at Sainsbury's.

Bahlsen Choco Leibniz White: These are white chocolate covered cocoa biscuits. I've tried the Choco Liebniz Milk Chocolate and Caramel varieties before but never this White chocolate version. I picked up a pack while they're on special offer. £1.00p at Sainsbury's.

McVities Marie Biscuits: I was quite surprised to see McVities branded Marie biscuits in the UK. Marie Biscuits (also known as Maria in Spain/Portugal) are the European version of Rich  Tea biscuits. They have a slightly different taste and I always used to pick up a few packs on holiday. At least McVities didn't release their Finger Marie version here in the UK! £1.20 at Sainsbury's.

Mr Kipling Lemon Fancies: Once again there are lots of lemon and orange flavoured cakes for Easter. I'll refer you my post last year "New Instore: Easter Cakes" as I spotted most of the same products - just with different packaging. Also back are the Mr. Kipling Lemon Whirls and Mr Kipling St. Clements Slices. £1.00p at Sainsbury's.

Shape Pineapple & Coconut Special Edition: A tropical inspired 0% fat yogurt with 63 calories per pot. £1.00p at Sainsbury's.

Müller Light Inspired by Barbados Piña Coloda: This is quite similar to the Müller Light Inspired by Bali yogurt from last year, except with added Rum flavour! £0.70p each at Sainsbury's.

Lidl Jolly Choc Spreads: I'm not sure if these are exactly new but it's certainly the first time I've seen them. These are chocolate spreads with added chocolate drops - basically mini Smarties - in either Chocolate Spread or Milk Spread. They're available this week as part of the Lidl "Taste of the USA" promotion. £1.29 at Lidl. £0.99p each at Lidl.

Don't forget if you spot any new products in store please let me know via email - grocerygems@gmail.com. Thank you!

New Starbucks Oats and Nutella Cookie & Create Your Own Nutella Coffee!

Starbucks recently launched a Nutella Cookie just ahead of Nutella Day a few weeks ago. It's described as a chewy and perfectly balanced oat cookie, delicately spiced with cinnamon and filled with a generous dollop of smooth, delicious Nutella chocolate & hazelnut spread.

Excitingly, the press release also included a recipe for how to create your own Nutella Coffee at Starbucks! If you've heard of the "secret Starbucks menu", then you'll know that there are plenty of drinks to order that aren't available on the standard menu. Keep reading below for exactly what to ask for in Starbucks to create a Nutella inspired coffee!

I couldn't wait to try out the new Oats & Nutella Cookie for myself and I was pleased to find just how generously sized the cookie is, and also how much Nutella filling there is inside! The outer oat cookie itself is absolutely delicious, it reminds me of a home baked cinnamon oat cookie, with a slightly soft and chewy texture. The inner Nutella filling is essentially a thick amount of chocolate hazelnut goodness within the cookie, and it adds an extra indulgence to the traditional oaty base. It's a winning combination especially when paired with a lovely hot drink too.

The photo above is actually of the new Starbucks Triple Hot Chocolate, which I couldn't help trying out at the same time (especially as the Junior Grocery Gems members were with me). For myself, I ordered a stronger coffee, which I always prefer when I'm having a sweet treat too.

Next time I'll definitely be taking the instructions below to my nearest Starbucks and asking the barista to make a Nutella coffee!

How to create your very own Nutella coffee at Starbucks:

With 80,000 different flavours to personalise your Starbucks, why not try a Nutella coffee on your next visit? Simply pop into your nearest store and ask for the following:

·        Tall Cafe Misto (filter coffee with plenty of hot milk)
·        Add Mocha Syrup (1/2 pump tall)
·        Add Hazelnut Syrup (1/2 pump tall)
·        Add a few drops of caramel drizzle
·        Sit back and enjoy!

Let me know if you've enjoyed the new Starbucks Oats and Nutella Cookie or if you try out the Nutella inspired coffee above!

Sunshakes Exotic Milkshakes - Mango

Milkshakes always seem to come in the same basic flavours of banana, strawberry, vanilla or chocolate. I've often wondered why there aren't more interesting flavours available here in the UK. Of course in other parts of the world there are some great flavours available. The founders of Sunshakes were inspired by the delicious blends of milks and exotic fruits they sampled in South Asia and the Caribbean to create the Sunshakes Exotic Milkshakes range in three unique flavours; Mango, Guava and Papaya.

The range is primarily available in supermarkets in the far East but they also available to purchase online, in the UK via Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/Sunshakes-Mango-Milkshake. Hopefully they will be picked up by some supermarkets here too so that they can be purchased individually.

I was lucky enough to receive a few of the Mango variety to try out. Mango is one of my favourite flavours so I was keen to try this milkshake version. The milkshake itself has a lovely refreshing taste and smooth texture. It's not as thick or sweet as other bottled milkshakes I've tried, and I think the creators have gone for more of a light and refreshing taste. I really enjoyed the mango flavour here, it's sweet and fruity, just like a ripe mango, but not too overpowering or strong. I think these exotic milkshakes would be delicious on a warm summer's day!

Review: Despicable Me Minion Made Baked Corn Snacks

A multipack of 12 bags of baked corn snacks featuring the cheeky Minion characters from Despicable Me (and soon their own Minion movie too). I couldn't resist at only £1.00 for such a big multipack, even though each snack bag is quite light at only 11g each with less than 50 calories per pack.

There are three flavours (four of each in the multipack); Carl's Cheese Toastie Flavour, Kevin's Pickled Onion Flavour, and Dave's Salt & Vinegar Flavour.

The baked corn snacks all have the same curved appearance and are quite lightly flavoured (especially the cheese one). Even though each bag is only 11g, they are still surprisingly full.

Kevin's Pickled Onion Flavour: Probably the strongest flavour of the three, although it's not as robust as other brands of Pickled Onion corn snacks. This is not a bad thing in my opinion and I found them quite tasty.

Dave's Salt 'n' Vinegar Flavour: These are quite similar to the Pickled Onion Flavour, in fact they could be mistaken for that flavour, just without the onion undertones.

Carl's Cheese Toastie Flavour: I quite liked these and their light cheese notes, but it's probably because I dislike Wotsits and their overly flavoured stinky cheesey taste! The flavour here has just enough cheese and salt to be tasty without being overbearing. However, I can imagine that fans of cheesier crisps would be disappointed.

Overall, I will probably buy these snacks again just because they're such a low calorie snack for those crisp craving moments. Each pack has 50 calories (well it's specifically given as 49.8 calories) and are free from artificial colours or preservatives, although disappointingly for kids snacks, they do contain MSG.

Review: Krispy Kreme Reese's Peanut Butter Doughnut

It was only a few weeks ago that Krispy Kreme teamed up with a popular spread, Lotus Biscoff, to release the Caramelised Biscoff doughnut. This time Krispy Kreme has joined one of the most iconic peanut butter brands to create the Reese's Peanut Butter Doughnut. It's a chocolate iced doughnut, filled with Reese's peanut butter, and topped with hazelnuts and extra Reese's peanut butter drops.

I was pleased to find that the filling in the Krispy Kreme Reese's doughnut is pure peanut butter, rather than a "kreme infused with peanut butter" (which makes it different to the peanut butter doughnut that is usually available at Krispy Kreme). Not only that, but this peanut butter is recognisably Reese's - with an extra salty and sweet peanut flavour. The Reese's peanut butter chips on top are not easy to find in the UK so it's great to see them included on this doughnut - each one adds an extra kick of peanut butter goodness. I don't usually like the chocolate icing that Krispy Kreme uses, but here the chocolate icing, and the dark chocolate drizzle, provides a welcome sweetness to soften the strong peanut butter flavour. Chocolate and peanut butter is always a winning combination in my opinion and it certainly works perfectly in these doughnuts.

I didn't think these Krispy Kreme Reese's Peanut Butter Doughnuts could overtake the recent Lotus Caramelised Biscoff doughnuts as my favourites, but I think the stronger flavoured filling just edges it for me.

Have you tried the new Krispy Kreme Reese's Peanut Butter doughnut yet? I'd love to know what you thought of it. Also, if anyone spots these available in the Tesco Krispy Kreme stands then let me know in the comments below - thanks!

Review: Lays Oven Crispy Thins Emmental Cheese

A quick review of the Lay's Oven Crispy Thins that I received in a lovely parcel from the Netherlands (check out my post HERE) recently. I hadn't heard of the Oven Crispy Thins range from Lays before, but apparently they are available in the Netherlands and Belgium in two flavours; Emmental Cheese or Olive Oil & Herbs. They're described as baked potato crackers and have 40% less fat than regular potato crisps.

The Lay's Oven Crispy Thins are wavy in appearance and have a light and crunchy texture. They're made with both wheat flour and potato flakes, giving them an interesting flavour that's a cross between a cracker and a potato snack. The Emmental Cheese flavouring is just delicious here too - very cheesy and quite salty, but still with that recognisable Emmental taste. It's a distinctive flavour but one that is still easy to eat and very moreish. I really enjoyed the Lay's Oven Crispy Thins as a snack and I'd love to see them brought over to the UK under the Walkers brand.

A big THANK YOU to Marin who sent me these as part of a selection of treats from the Netherlands!

Nakd Protein Crunch Bars (Natural Balance Foods)

I'm already a fan of the Nakd range of raw fruit and nut bars from Natural Balance Foods - their Christmas Pud variety was one of my favourite new products from last year. I was lucky enough to be asked to review the Nakd Crunch range of Protein bars which come in four appealing flavours; Banana Crunch, Apple Crunch, Strawberry Crunch and Cocoa Crunch.

All four varieties are dairy, wheat and gluten free, are 100% vegan, and contain soya crunchies for extra protein. The addition of the soya crunchies, not only adds extra crunch, but also makes the texture lighter and less dense than the original Nakd bars. They contain plenty of slow releasing energy with 5.5g (18%) of added protein creating a satisfying and filling sweet snack.

Nakd Banana Crunch: This is my favourite of all the Crunch varieties - the ripe banana flavour is just so sweet and strong here. It suits the crunchier texture and sweet fruit and nut base perfectly, creating a lovely treat for only 104 calories.

Ingredients: Dates (43%), Soya Crunchies (18%), Cashews, Raisins, Banana, Apple Juice concentrate, hint of natural flavouring. 104 calories, 5.5g protein per 30g bar.

Nakd Apple Crunch: There are large pieces of dried apple throughout this bar, as you can see in the photo above. The apple flavour is quite subtle, with the base flavours of dates, raisins and cashews being stronger than the apple itself. It's perhaps the most simple tasting of all the four flavours but I still enjoyed this one in the morning or with a cup of tea.

Ingredients: Dates (43%), Soya Crunchies (18%), Cashews, Raisins, Apple, Apple Juice concentrate, hint of natural flavouring. 108 calories, 5.5g protein per 30g bar.

Nakd Strawberry Crunch: Like the Banana Crunch, the Strawberry Crunch has a lovely strong fruity flavour. The added strawberries provide lots of natural fruity flavour and sweetness. This one was a favourite with the Mini Grocery Gems testers and I'll definitely be buying it in future.

Ingredients: Dates (43%), Soya Crunchies (17%), Cashews, Raisins, Strawberries, Apple Juice concentrate, hint of natural flavouring. 109 calories, 5.5g protein per 30g bar.

Nakd Cocoa Crunch: This one is slightly different to the rest, with it's darker cocoa base and a less sweet flavour overall. The cocoa adds an earthy dark chocolate flavour and works particularly well with the texture of the soya crunchies. It's a great bar that satisfies a chocolate craving whilst also being a filling snack.

Ingredients: Dates (43%), Soya Crunchies (17%), Cashews, Raisins, Cocoa, Apple Juice concentrate, hint of natural flavouring. 106 calories, 5.5g protein per 30g bar.

Overall, I was impressed by the delicious flavours and crunchier texture of the Nakd Crunch bars range. If you've tried Nakd bars before and found them too dense, or just not been a fan, then it's worth giving the Crunch bar range a try - I enjoy both but my husband much prefers these bars. They manage to be healthier than many other cereal bars/snacks whilst also being full of flavour. I love how filling they are too, especially for just over 100 calories each.

Krispy Kreme Love Bug Hug Doughnuts

Adorable ladybird doughnuts from Krispy Kreme for Valentine's Day. I'm having technical problems so I can't write a full review at the moment, but here's a few photos. These cute doughnuts have a generous strawberry jam filling and are decorated with a thick sugary icing. They're only available for the next few days.

Updated: Annoying technical problems now resolved!

The Love Bug Hug doughnuts are just the cutest doughnuts I've ever seen and made such a lovely Valentine's Day treat. I don't think they're the best tasting doughnuts that Krispy Kreme has to offer, the red icing on top just made these a bit too sugary for me, but I did enjoy the traditional strawberry jammy filling.

New Walkers Sunbites Crispy Crackers, Pitta Bakes and Crackers & Dip

Sunbites have launched some exciting new additions to their range of multigrain snacks; Crispy Crackers, Pitta Bakes, and Crackers & Dip. The oven baked Crispy Crackers and Pitta Bakes are available in several foodie inspired varieties using all natural flavours and are free from MSG and artificial colours. I love finding alternatives to regular crisps so I was excited to receive a selection of these snacks to review.

The new Sunbites Pitta Bakes, are available in several flavours: Vintage Cheddar and Caramelised Onion, Roasted Red Pepper and Chilli and Oven Roasted Onion and Rosemary. The Sunbites Crispy Crackers are available in four flavours; Cream Cheese and Chive, Sun Ripened Sweet Chilli, Oven Roasted Onion and Rosemary, and Lightly Salted.

Sunbites Pitta Bakes: I was sent the Oven Roasted Onion & Rosemary flavour to review. These oven baked pitta snacks have a lovely crunchy texture, much firmer than regular crisps, with a generous amount of seasoning. They have the expected flavours of onion and rosemary but also delicious notes of garlic and cheese coming through strongly too. These are great for dipping, especially with some houmous.

Sunbites Crispy Crackers: The Sunripened Sweet Chilli flavour have an unusual oval shape and a surprisingly light and crunchy texture. I really enjoyed the flavour of these, they're quite sweet with a tomato flavour (and looking at the ingredients there is tomato in these) and a chilli kick at the end. They're almost like a chilli ketchup flavour (that should be a suggestion in the next Walkers choose a flavour compeition!) and are very moreish.

Sunbites Crackers & Dip: This is interesting new product; each box contains a pack of Sunbites Crackers and also a large pot of either a sweet onion or salsa dip. There are two flavours available; Caramelised Red Onion Chutney with Lightly Salted Crackers, and Sundried Tomato and Roasted Red Pepper Salsa with Lightly Salted Crackers.

I received the Lightly Salted Crackers with Caramelised Red Onion Chutney, which is a deliciously sweet and tangy dip. I was surprised by how big the pot of dip is - definitely enough for several servings (it was also delicious with the Sunbites Pitta Bakes!). I had this at home so I just popped the rest in the fridge to save for later. The whole thing is very tasty and the combination of the multigrain, slightly salty, crackers with the caramelised onion dip is an ideal snacking pairing.

Overall, we've really enjoyed all varieties we tried from the new Sunbites range. I would definitely purchase the Pitta Bakes and Crispy Crackers in the future as a flavourful alternative to crisps. My kids are already fans of the original Sunbites Multigrain Snacks and I'm sure the new Pitta Bakes and Crispy Crackers will be popular as savoury treats for their lunch boxes.
