Vegan Week: Dairy Free Chocovered Crunchee Bites

This week I'll be reviewing one vegan friendly treat per day. I've been trying to stay away from dairy for a few weeks now, and my brother very kindly bought me a whole box of vegan treats as I was missing my chocolate fix! Don't worry if you're not interested in vegan products as I'll still be covering my usual Christmas reviews and New Instore posts this week too.

First up are these Dairy Free Chococovered Crunchee Bites from the Fabulous Free From Factory. These are described as honeycomb toffee covered in a delicious blend of cocoa with raw sugar and soya. These are also free from hydrogenated fats, artificial colours, artificial preservatives and gluten.

The insides look just like the sweet honeycomb of a Crunchy bar and it tastes just as good too. In fact I would have to say that I prefer these little Crunchee Bites as they have a more satisfying chocolate-to-honeycomb ratio. Each bites starts off with a familiar super sweet honeycomb crunch that becomes chewier and ends with a delicious chocolate melt. Of course the chocolate here is less creamy than a standard milk chocolate but it still has a lovely cocoa flavour.

Overall, these were a very successful start to my Vegan Week of reviews. I would happily recommend these to anyone who likes honeycomb.

Nespresso Christmas 2015 Limited Edition Variations

This year Nespresso has released three Limited Edition Variations (that's flavoured coffees to you and me) as part of it's festive range. The three new flaovurs are: Vanilla Cardamon, Choco Ginger and Vanilla Amaretti. I always look forward to finding out what flavours Nespresso will release for the Christmas period and I had high hopes for this years promising selection. The three new flavours were released a few weeks ago and will be available for the next few months.

The sleeve packaging is gorgeously festive (especially compared to the 2014 Nespresso Limited Edition Variations), with a sparkly pattern on each of the boxes.

I purchased the Nespresso Limited Edition Variations Gift Set (shown above) which includes all three sleeves of the festive flavours and we've been testing them out for the past week. Here are my thoughts on each of the flavours:

Vanilla Amaretti: This was easily my favourite of all three of the 2015 Nespresso Variations. The flavour is a perfect representation of the name, with sweet hints of vanilla and baked almond biscuits coming through together. The balance of the two flavours is just right and also combines well with the base coffee. Rating: 9 out of 10.

Vanilla Cardamon: I enjoyed this as a vanilla flavoured coffee but I did find the cardamon flavour lacking. I was expecting more of a vanilla chai type flavour here and instead I couldn't taste much apart from the vanilla. Mr Grocery Gems disagrees with me here - he found the coffee to have a nicely spiced background flavour. Rating: 7 out of 10.

Choco Ginger: This one is my least favourite of the three, which is not really a surprise since I'm not really a mocha fan - chocolate flavoured coffees are just not my thing. The chocolate flavour comes through strongly with only the barest hint of ginger and ultimately I found the chocolate too overpowering. I would have preferred a stronger ginger flavour here to create a more balanced flavour. Rating: 6 out of 10.

Overall, I was impressed by the 2015 Nespresso Variations, if only because they are so much better than last years flavours. My top pick would be the Vanilla Amaretti by far, but I'll still be buying a few more of the Gift Sets for family and friends as Christmas presents.

A quick note on the flavourings and ingredients. The base coffee used in these capsules is the Livanto Grand Cru with an intensity of 6.  The ingredients list natural flavours in each of the coffees. There are no added syrups or sugars.

New Instore: Pringles Pigs In Blankets & Kit Kat Festive Break

Pringles Pigs In Blankets: Thank you to Richard W. who sent me this great find and photo via Twitter. I believe this is a new Pringles flavour for the UK this season. Basically these Pringles are sausage AND bacon flavour! It's certainly a great festive flavour and looks a lot more appealing than some of their wacky sweet flavours from last year. Available at Waitrose (and currently on a buy one get one free offer).

Nestlé Festive Break Cookies & Cream: Kit Kat have undergone a little festive makeover on their packaging. Even though the flavours aren't new it's still nice to see some new Christmassy designs. Each multipack features a different cute character. The Cookies & Cream Festive Break is my favourite with it's snowman. Spotted at Asda.

Nestlé Festive Break Original:: The regular Kit Kat has the most traditional design with a cheerful Santa. Spotted at Asda.

Nestlé Festive Break Dark: The packaging looks great and the black background really suits the flavour. Spotted at Asda.

Nestlé Festive Break Orange & Toffee Treat: The Kit Kat Orange and Toffee Treat flavours have also had a Festive Break makeover. The only one that didn't have festive packaging was the Mint variety so let me know if you spot that one! Available at Asda.

Review: J20 Midnight Amber & Midnight Forest

J20 have recently released two new limited edition range of Midnight Blend juice drinks. There are two flavours in the range, Midnight Amber and Midnight Forest, which are both inspired by the 'dark and mischievous moment each night when the end of one day blends into the start of the next'. The design of the each bottle is gorgeous, with gold lettering and images that really captures the midnight theme of these drinks.

J20 Midnight Forest: The Midnight Forest is described as a blend of real orange and cherry juices with a hint of chocolate flavour. As a big fan of the J20 Glitter Berry limited edition I was really excited to try the Midnight Forest blend. The flavour here is mainly of the unusual combination of orange and cherry, which surprisingly works together really well. The orange is the dominant flavour but underneath it all is an extra sweetness and richness from the subtle hints of chocolate. It's a nice combination that is not too overpowering or heavy (especially with the chocolate) and is still a sweet and refreshing juice.

J20 Midnight Amber: The Midnight Amber is described as a burst of orange and lemon fruit juices blended with winter spice flavour. I was expecting this one to be lighter tasting but the hints of spices give it a touch of warmth and seasonal flavour. The base juices of orange and mandarin come through strongly with the lemon adding a tart edge. The hint of spices is quite subtle, and I would have preferred them to be a bit stronger, but I could detect some cinnamon and ginger in there.

J20 Midnight Forest is available at all major supermarkets and the J20 Midnight Amber is exclusively available at Marstons, Greene King and Fullers pubs.

Review: Press'd Arabica - Coffee In A Squeeze!

Press'd is a new range of pure Arabica concentrated coffee in little squeezable bottles. Made for coffee lovers who are pressed for time, each pocket-sized bottle makes 16 cups of coffee - simply squeeze and add water. I received two Press'd samples to review; Press'd Colombian Arabica Coffee and Press'd Caramel Arabica Coffee.

As expected the coffee is super easy to make. A quick squeeze adds a good amount of the glossy and thick coffee liquid. I added hot water (200ml is recommended, otherwise it will be too watery or need an extra squeeze) and a little almond milk. Even though I was excited to try the Press'd concept I have to admit I was a little sceptical as to how good the coffee would taste. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised by just how enjoyable I found both varieties. The coffee  has a lovely, smooth flavour that is quite rich and strong. It didn't froth up like my usual coffee does but it still has a satisfying flavour that is similar to a filter coffee.

The Press'd Caramel is made with natural flavouring rather than a sugary syrup, so it's not too cloying or sweet. The caramel flavour is quite subtle at first but builds nicely with each sip. I don't usually enjoy flavoured instant coffees at all but this one was very enjoyable. The added flavour does not overpower the actual coffee itself which is how I prefer it.

Overall, I was impressed by both varieties of Press'd Arabica Coffee. The squeezy bottle is really handy and I can think of about a million scenarios where it would be useful!

New Instore: Cadbury Rudoph & Robin Cakes & More.

Cadbury Rudolph & Robin Cakes: The Cadbury Christmas range that I've seen so far seems fairly similar to previous years. These Rudolph & Robin Cakes have a cute design and are described as a chocolate flavoured sponge layered with white chocolate creme, covered in milk chocolate and finished with white chocolate decoration and a light sweet dusting. £1.00p at Co-Op.
Image: Cadbury
Cadbury Festive Cake Selection: The Rudolph cakes also seem to feature in this new Festive Cake Selection Leave One for Santa. There are ten cakes in each box, including one with Santa's name for Christmas Eve! £3.00p at Morrisons.

Kellogg's Coco Pops Seasons Greetings Box: Staying on the Christmas theme, look out for the new festively decorated boxes from Kellogg's. So far I've spotted three different ones. £2.00p at Sainsbury's.

Kellogg's Rice Krispies Seasons Greetings Box: This box is just the cutest and I've already picked up a box. Even though my kids are not really keen on Rice Krispies as a breakfast cereal they won't say no to Rice Krispies treats! £2.00p at Sainsbury's.

Kellogg's Corn Flakes Seasons Greetings Box: Finally, a very retro looking box for Kellogg's Corn Flakes with a jolly laughing Santa and plain white background. If you spot any other festive Kellogg's boxes then let me know via the details below - thanks! £2.00p at Sainsbury's.

Müller Corner American Classic Raspberry Cheesecake Brownie Yogurt: This latest limited edition yogurt was spotted by Lucy W. in Tesco. Many thanks for the photo Lucy! It's described as a cheesecake flavour yogurt with a raspberry layer and chocolate brownie pieces. £0.68p at Tesco.

Boots Delicious Cranberry, Orange & Belgian White Chocolate Popcorn: Thanks also to Luci J. for this new find and photo. This combination of cranberry, orange and white chocolate is a really unique and interesting one. Luci said that it was really delicious and a great flavour for popcorn lovers. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for these next time I'm in Boots! £0.70p at Boots.

Review: Limited Edition Surf & Comfort Mistletoe duo

Comfort and Surf have released a gorgeously winter duo; the new detergent 'Surf Winter Violets & Mistletoe' and a fabric softener 'Comfort Creations Mistletoe & Crocus'. Apparently this is the first time that Surf and Comfort have co-ordinated a scent collection that works beautifully together. The bottles look very festive and both have the same silver and purple colour theme and mistletoe decoration.

I was ridiculously eager to get my washing machine on and give these a try! Who knew that the magic words 'limited edition' would even work with laundry detergent?

The Surf Winter Violets & Mistletoe and Comfort Creations Mistletoe & Crocus have been specially blended by perfume experts to create festive fragrances with the scents of winter flowers. Both fragrances are fresh florals but with gorgeous winter warmth undertones. What I love about these fragrances is that they are still appropriate for laundry, leaving a lovely fresh scent that is not too overpowering. I've been a fan of the Comfort Creations range since I last reviewed them and I very rarely use any other brand these days. I used the Comfort Creations Mistletoe & Crocus with both the new Surf detergent and with my regular detergent and it always left  the laundry (and my whole kitchen!) with a beautifully fresh scent.

I always enjoy changing up my laundry detergents (especially the softener) and I can heartily recommend this new mistletoe collection for adding a little bit of winter freshness to your clothes.

Surf Winter Violets & Mistletoe has an RRP of £5.00 for 875ml. Comfort Creations Mistletoe & Crocus has an RRP of £3.30 for 1.16L. Both are available from all major supermarkets until 1 February 2016.

Degustabox October Review & a £6 Discount Code!

The latest Degustabox arrived during the half term break and it was fun for the kids to open it up with me. Just like previous boxes, the October Degustabox features a mix of well known brands and new foodie treats.

This month Degustabox have doubled the discount code, offering a massive £6 off next month's box. That's a box packed full of surprise groceries for only £6.99p delivered. So if you've been thinking about giving Degustabox a whirl now is the the perfect time to give them a try!

Discount CodeBLDEG15

Each Degustabox costs £12.99 a month, which includes delivery, with no fixed contract involved. Degustabox have kindly provided my readers with the following Discount Code for £6.00 off your next Degustabox, bringing the cost to £6.99 delivered. Enter the code - BLDEG15

Here's a closer look and review of the products inside this months Degustabox:

Cirio: There were two Cirio products in my Degustabox; the Cirio La Classica Passata and Cirio Chopped Tomatoes. Ever since I first tried Cirio La Classica Passata (in a previous Degustabox) I've been buying it regularly. It's just perfect as the base for home-made sauces. The chopped tomatoes are also a useful store cupboard ingredient and the Cirio brand has a lovely rich flavour.

Geeta's: I was also pleased to find two products from the Geeta's range; a Lime & Chilli Chutney and a Korma Curry Paste. The sauce sachet is a mild curry paste with coconut and exotic spices, and creates a delicious aromatic curry for two. The Lime & Chilli Chutney looks delicious and is a blend of 'kagzi' (paper thin) lime and fresh chilli.

Lorina Coconut & Lime: Lorina is a premium French lemonade brand that uses 100% natural ingredients and is free from any artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. The idea of a coconut flavoured lemonade sounded too good to be true so I was excited to try this one. The reality was just as delicious as I was hoping and I think this may just be my new favourite drink! The coconut flavour is just so creamy and tastes delicious with the refreshing hints of lime. I hope I can find a local stockist because this is a delightful drink.

The Snack Organisation Presents... Sweet Chilli Rice Crackers: These crackers are available in Tesco and Sainsbury's and come in three flavours; Lightly Salted, Sweet Chilli and Teriyaki. The base crackers have a similar flavour to rice cakes but with a much crunchier texture. The Sweet Chilli here is very strongly flavoured with a gorgeous combination of sweetness and chilli heat. They're extremely tasty and I'll certainly be buying them in future.

The Snack Organisation Presents... Freeze-Dried Apricots: There are four varieties in this range; Strawberry, Apricot, Apple and Pineapple.

My eldest son loves apricots, and especially dried apricots, so I was curious to see what he would think of a freeze dried version. Happily he really enjoyed them. They have a lovely natural fruity flavour, that is not too sweet, with a unique crunchy, yet light, texture.

Liberation Foods: Liberation is a Fair Trade nut company which is owned by small-scaled farmer co-ops in Africa, India and Latin America. Their mission is to change the world nut by nut by bringing nut producers and consumers of the world together so everyone gets a better deal. There are several flavours available; Fairtrade Oven Baked Salted Cashews & Peanuts, Fairtrade Oven Baked Chilli & Lime Cashews with Peanuts and Roasted Corn, and finally Fairtrade Oven Baked Mixed Peppercorn Peanuts with Cashews & Habas Fritas.

I received the Oven Baked Salted Cashews & Peanuts which are available at Waitrose. What I loved about these was the fact that the salty flavour has been added as a sort of glaze. That means that these nuts are salty without leaving a mess on your fingers. They're also not greasy at all, which is usually the case with salted peanuts. Another great product and I'll be looking out for more from this range.

Naked Marshmallow Salted Caramel: Naked Marshmallows are hand made in small batches using natural ingredients. Last month's Degustabox also included a gourmet marshmallow brand which I really enjoyed so I was delighted to find another new brand to try.

There are three marshmallows in the pack, each topped with salted caramel curls which gives them an impressive appearance. The texture is very light and creamy but unfortunately I found the flavour a bit too 'milky' for my tastes.

Kabuto Noodles Chicken Ramen: Fresh tasting noodles with chicken, ginger, chilli, spring onion and coriander. This flavour is inspired by the chilli chicken ramen dishes of Japan and is made using quality ingredients without any additives or preservatives. My eldest son is a big fan of these noodles and I like the fact that he can enjoy them without any of the nasty ingredients of other pot noodles.

9Bar Original Carob Hit: 9Bar is the Product of the Month in the October Degustabox. Each Original 9Bar is packed with nutritious sunflower, pumpkin, sesame and hemp seeds with a smooth carob topping. They're free from gluten, wheat, egg and yeast. I'm not really keen on seeds, I don't mind a few of them in muesli or cereal, but I don't like seed based bars. I'll be passing these along to a friend who I know is a big fan of 9Bar products.

Chip Strips: These are a really fun snack! Each pack is full of long chip snacks (about 20cm!) that are very original as well as tasty. There were two flavours in the Degustabox; Sea Salt & Vinegar and Smokey BBQ.

The actual base Chip Strips have a flavour that is similar to Pringles. They're light and crunchy and very moreish. My favourite variety was the Sea Salt & Vinegar as it's not too salty and has a natural tasting vinegar flavour. I would definitely buy these again.

The October Degustabox also included a full £2.00p voucher for President Butter which I'll be using on my next shopping trip. Overall, I enjoyed the selection in this months Degustabox, especially the great mix of useful grocery items and savoury snacks. My favourites this month were the Liberation Foods nuts, The Snack Organisation Rice Crackers, Chip Strips and of course the Lorina premium lemonade.

The new advert is hitting TV screens on 7th November but here's an early look! Go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1UdCPVdJEo or just watch below:

More info on the advert from Cadbury:

And the winning Walkers Bring It Back Flavour is...

Back in September I reviewed all five retro flavours in the Walkers Bring It Back flavour campaign. Crisp fans had the chance to vote to bring back their favourite classic flavour from a choice of; Toasted Cheese, Beef & Onion, Cheese & Chive, Lamb & Mint, and Barbecue. Today Walkers announced that the winning flavour that will now be back on the shelves is - BEEF & ONION!

I'm really pleased with the result as the Beef & Onion was also my favourite flavour and received the highest score in my review with a 9 out of 10. Funnily enough my second highest rating, an 8 out of 10 for the Cheese & Chive, also came second in the vote!

Here's the full announcement from Walkers:

BEEF & ONION HERE TO STAY!

After months of voting, Beef & Onion is crowned the winner of Walkers’ Bring it Back campaign

The nation has today spoken with the winner of Walkers Bring it Back competition being unveiled after a staggering 1.3 million votes were tallied from across the UK. Beef & Onion proved the most popular nostalgic flavour among crisp lovers, receiving almost 480,000 votes.

The competition which launched back in September, saw Walkers bring back five classic flavours and asked the nation to vote for their favourite via Twitter, Facebook and the Walkers website.

The second most popular flavour was Cheese & Chive, followed by Lamb & Mint, Toasted Cheese and Barbecue. As the winner, Beef & Onion will now remain on shelves alongside the newly reintroduced Marmite flavour.

Competition voting data also highlighted the incredible passion of crisp fans, with some voting thousands of times for a chance to keep their preferred flavour on shelves.

Gary Lineker, whom this years mark his 20th anniversary working with Walkers, said: “I’m not surprised we had such a huge response from Walkers crisps fans. A day doesn’t go by when I’m not asked by someone to bring back a flavour from the past. Now it seems, for Beef & Onion fans, their wish has come true!”

Commenting on the success of the competition, Walkers’ Marketing Director Rachel Holmes says: “The success of this campaign has absolutely exceeded all expectations. We’re delighted to have Beef & Onion back on shelves and for all the other Bring it Back flavours – be sure to hit the stores quick for those last few packs before they’re all gone!”

Walkers' Beef & Onion flavour will available to buy in stores nationwide from 23rd of November in a six pack single format.

Review: Müller Kids Corner Merry Crunchmas Yogurts

The latest limited edition from Müller is this Christmas themed Kids Corner Merry Chrunchmas. It's the usual combination of fun seasonal cereal shapes with a separate serving of vanilla flavour yogurt.

The Müller Kids Corner Merry Chrunchmas yogurts come in packs of four. They're described as mini crunchy reindeer and red baubles with vanilla flavour yogurt.

I haven't actually tasted these yogurts myself but my kids tell me that they taste the same as the previous Müller Kids Corner limited editions (such as the recent Halloween yogurts). They both really liked the crunchy cereal shapes and the sweet vanilla yogurt. The reindeer shapes and red balls look very fun and festive too!
